Bunnahabhain Distillery

Bunnahabhain combines an unpeated malt specification with relatively short-to-moderate fermentation and unusually tall pear-shaped stills. The long necks increase separation during distillation, helping create a lighter, fruitier distillate despite the robust oily texture for which the make is known. Sherry-led maturation then builds dried fruit, nuts and spice onto that clean coastal spirit rather than relying on peat smoke as the primary marker of Islay identity.

Bunnahabhain is one of Islay's great counterpoints to the island's smoky stereotype. Its core spirit is unpeated and passes through the tallest stills on Islay, giving a lighter, fruitier distillate with enough oil and structure to handle rich sherry maturation. That combination explains why classic Bunnahabhain can taste coastal and powerful without needing heavy peat smoke.
