House character

What makes the spirit taste as it does

Ardnamurchan's mixed wooden and stainless-steel washback regime gives the distillery flexibility in how fermentation-derived character is developed, while the exact fermentation duration is not stated in the verified source set. The spirit still's boil ball increases reflux, and external shell-and-tube condensers support a clean but still weighty spirit structure. On-site dunnage maturation preserves a close link between production and maturation, supporting the distillery's stated gently smoky, rich, oily, honeyed and fruity house direction.

Why we pour it

Ardnamurchan combines modern engineering with a deliberately traditional maturation setup. Its spirit still uses a boil ball to encourage extra reflux, while both wooden and stainless-steel washbacks are used in fermentation and the whisky matures in dunnage warehouses beside the distillery. The result is a West Highland style built around gentle peat, oiliness, honeyed fruit and coastal character rather than aggressive smoke.

Production

How it is made

Water

The distillery uses water from the Glenmore spring to reduce new make spirit to 63.5% ABV before cask filling; the Glenmore river supplies cooling water.

Fermentation

Ardnamurchan uses seven washbacks in total: four wooden washbacks, comprising one oak and three Oregon pine, plus three stainless-steel washbacks.

Stills & distillation

The distillery uses traditional copper pot stills: a 10,000-litre wash still and a 6,000-litre spirit still. The spirit still has a boil ball for additional reflux, and both stills feed standard shell-and-tube condensers located outside the building. Heating is by steam generated from a local woodchip biomass boiler.

Peat

The distillery describes its intended house profile as showing gentle peat smoke rather than a heavily peated style.

Maturation

Ardnamurchan matures whisky on site in its own dunnage warehouses on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, close to the North Atlantic.
